Students experience various forms and degrees of trauma as a result of death, illness, crisis, and loss, often affecting behavioral, social-emotional, and academic growth, which can lead to harmful behaviors if unrecognized and untreated. Through scenario-based examples and activities, participants will learn how to identify traumatic events, experiences, and effects. A trauma-informed approach within the multi-tiered system of support will be described, and specific examples and resources will be provided in order to apply the concepts learned.
Objectives:
- Recognize indicators/risk factors of trauma among students.
- Recognize students experiencing trauma and/or grief.
- Identify examples of tiered supports for students experiencing trauma and/or grief.
A brief overview of the history of ACEs will be discussed, along with the neuroscience of trauma and development. Real-world examples of common trauma responses and strategies for addressing them will be explored. Usable strategies for working with students with varying levels of trauma, education, and development in classrooms, small groups, and individual work will be discussed and provided.
Webinar 1- Wed. Oct. 20 : Supporting Youth with Trauma Experiences Part 1 - Intervention Matching for Student Success
Youth who have experienced trauma often express their needs through behaviors that may not align with traditional school expectations. When educators and caregivers view these behaviors through a trauma-informed lens, as communication rather than defiance, they can respond with interventions that promote safety, connection, and success.
In this webinar, we will explore common trauma-related behaviors seen in school settings and examine practical, effective interventions that address the underlying needs behind those behaviors. Participants will leave with strategies to better support students academically, behaviorally, and emotionally, helping them build skills for success both in and beyond the classroom.
Webinar 2 - Wed. Dec. 8: Supporting Youth with Trauma Experiences Part 2 - Supporting Trauma-Affected Students Through School Break Transitions
Students who have experienced trauma, or who continue to face ongoing adversity, often find transitions especially challenging. Changes in routine can interrupt the stability, progress, and sense of success they experience at school, particularly during transitions to and from school breaks.
In this webinar, we will explore proactive strategies educators and support staff can implement before breaks to help students prepare for changes in routine, as well as effective interventions to support students when they return. Participants will gain practical tools to reduce the behavioral and academic impacts that school breaks can create and to foster smoother, more supportive transitions for trauma-affected students.
